A few weeks ago we heard the distressing news that Netflix's 'House of Cards' season 2 would likely end the series altogether, given leading star Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright's pressing film careers, but it seems the breakout political drama may have hope after all. Netflix brass now believe a third season to be in the 'Cards,' with negotiations already underway.

Via Deadline, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos recently answered questions from the keynote Saturday at Film Independent‘s ninth annual convention, putting to rest 'House of Cards' EP Rick Cleveland's earlier words that season 2 would likely represent the last for the series. “Our intent is that the show keep going for sure,” said Sarandos of the future. “It was a 26-episode commitment [to begin with]. It was not our intent that it just run for two seasons. Talks are in progress right now, so stay tuned.”

Elsewhere, we know relatively little of ‘House of Cards” second season in early 2014, beyond a series regular promotion for Michael Gill (President Garrett Walker), and the loss of director David Fincher. In Fincher’s absence, both Emmy nominees Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright will step behind the camera to helm episodes of the political series, as will ‘Orange is the New Black’ guest director Jodie Foster..

‘House of Cards,’ itself adapted from a British novel penned by former Conservative Party Chief of Staff Michael Dobbs and previously adapted for a BBC miniseries, follows Spacey as Congressman (now Vice President!) Frank Underwood, a wily, murderous politician worming his way to the White House. Willimon updated the setting from Dobbs’ original novel, which followed an ambitious yet morally dubious British politician eying Margaret Thatcher’s position as Prime Minister in her final days.

We're certainly relieved to hear that 'House of Cards' may yet have life in it beyond the second season, though it remains to be seen how Netflix will handle sustained production of its original series. The future of ‘Arrested Development‘ content remains unclear, while Eli Roth horror thriller ‘Hemlock Grove‘ narrowly earned a reduced second season order. ‘Orange is the New Black‘ has also been confirmed to return in 2014, though we’ve seen several conflicting reports of behind-the-scenes strife there as well.

What say you? Are you happy to hear 'House of Cards' could continue to a third season? How far would you like to see the Netflix original drama taken in the future? Listen to that snazzy theme again below, and give us your thoughts in the comments!
