Hunters Urged To Be “Bear Aware”
In light of two recent bear attacks in the state, one of which was fatal, the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Department is reminding hunters to be ''bear aware".
Spokesman Dick Blust says hunters can be especially vulnerable to bear attacks because they are moving quietly, often during dawn and dusk periods when bears are also likely to be active. Hunters also often use game calls which can attract bears.
Blust says hunters can take several steps to protect themselves, including such simple steps as hunting with a partner and being alert for the presence of bears. He says it's also a good idea to carry bear spray and know how to use it.
Blust says it's also important to have the spray where you can get to it quickly. Other important bear safety precautions include learning to recognize bear sign, retrieving downed game quickly and making nose while packing out game.
