On our Facebook page, I found a message from Mary wondering why the Redwood was closed. I haven’t been there in some time, having moved our very successful promotion called “Thankful Thursday,” which has so far raised over a million dollars for local charities. That success was under the ownership of “Alf” who had rescued the bar from bankruptcy, and then slowly built up a very popular neighborhood bar and package liquor store.

Alf had built a friendly and warm watering hole where a broad mix of great people could get together and enjoy themselves with the help of a great staff, including Cheyenne’s favorite bartender.

Alf could charm a crowd like few I have ever seen, but he also has “Alf’s Pub” and he was ready to focus on that, so after about five years he sold the Redwood. After the sale, the personnel, the patrons and the feel of the place changed, which may have led to an incident in March.

I had stopped going to The Redwood, but in driving by on a number of occasions, I noticed no or very few cars parked at the bar. They shut their doors a couple of weeks ago and now the bar is up for sale for $895,000.

I will always cherish the memories of raising money for great local charities with the help of some wonderfully civic-minded sponsors and some of the greatest people you could ever meet.

The live auctions, the card games, the 50/50 raffle, the ever-present chance of winning $500 just for walking in the door. We had lots and lots of winners, but the biggest winner was Cheyenne and the charities that keep this city so great. That is not over, but the location has changed

Thanks to all involved and especially Alf, a kind of patron saint for Cheyenne, Thankful Thursdays still exist, but at a new location, AMvets Post 10. We’ll let you know when the new series is about to begin.
