We are no strangers to stories about transplants. Heart transplants, kidney transplants, and even blood transplants. But what about a human head transplant?

2017 should be an exciting year for science because that is the year when the first human head transplant is scheduled  to happen.

It has been confirmed that the human head transplant is to take place at Harbin Medical Center in China. The two surgeons scheduled to perform the transplant are Sergio Canavero, or Italy and Ren Xiaoping, of China.

Valery Spiridonov, who has Werdig-Hoffman Disease, is scheduled to undergo the surgery in December of 2017. The disease is an incurable muscle-deteriorating disease, which is why Spiridonov volunteered for the project.

Some are saying that this will never work, but the two surgeons are quite sure that they can pull this off. In the 1970's, it was reported that a similar procedure was performed on a monkey. The monkey, allegedly survived 10 on a respirator, before dying.

After the surgery, Mr. Spiridonov will be in a coma for about a month, while being medicated and monitored by scientists and doctors. Providing the scientists and surgeons are sure of at least 99% success, it is then that they will plan to proceed with the 36 hour transplant.

It's a little scary to think about. However, the patient seems to have nothing to lose and if no one every volunteered to have their heart or kidney replaced, we'd never know that it could be done....successfully.
