Since the completion of the roundabout at East 19th/ Pershing Boulevard/ Converse, I STILL avoid it, mainly because it looks confusing, is it?

In a recent article in the Wyoming Tribune Eagle, they stated that "62 accidents have occurred in the roundabout in the first seven months of this year,"  but why?  According to this article, it's because of the two roundabout lanes and the confusion when it comes to exiting out of the roundabout.

I've heard many people say that when they're in the inside lane and need to get out of the roundabout, they have to cut over to the outside lane.  They often can't see that person behind them in that outside lane, and if you're in the outside lane, someone from the inside lane trying to exit out of the roundabout might cut you off, without a moment's notice.

Maybe we're not clear on how to enter and exit a roundabout.  According to the Cheyenne Metropolitan Planning Organization, a "modern" roundabout is basically "a circular intersection that provides a safer and more efficient operation than standard traffic signal controlled intersections. Traffic speeds entering a roundabout are typically 15 to 20 mph."

They say that roundabouts are safer because the reduced speeds, and roundabouts are said to cause fewer accidents, "8 versus 32," according to their website.  These factors are supposed to make it easier for motorists to make choices at that very busy intersection.

The City of Cheyenne has offered these safety tips when it comes to driving through the roundabout which include slowing down, thinking about what direction you're needing to go and check out the overhead signs before entering the intersection.  They also say that speeds should NEVER exceed 20 mph when traveling through a roundabout.

Since we moved from Colorado, my husband and I have had some experience going through roundabouts, since there's several intersections that have roundabouts in the Loveland area, however I have to admit, when I approach the roundabout at 19th/Pershing Boulevard/Converse, I'm a bit timid, and I often try to avoid it if possible, especially in bad weather conditions.

Do you find the roundabout easy to drive through at this intersection, or are you like me, and still avoid using the roundabout?
