James Gest reported that there are about 30,000 gun related incidents in the country every year. Here are some interesting ideas behind the studies of promoted gun laws.

It's one thing to hear about gun deaths, but it is a whole other story to know some studies behind how the gun casualties actually happened. Was it suicide? Was it accidental? Was it murder?

Here are some of the stats, according to some studies, that will help you decide whether or not you think gun control is a good or bad idea.

  • 65% of gun related deaths are due to suicide, which gun laws would never been able to prevent.
  • 17% have been reported as criminal actions due to drugs or gang activity. Mentally ill situations are also counted in this percentage.
  • 15% are caused by law enforcement officers within the line of duty and, in many cases, are justified for one reason or another.
  • 3% are due to discharge accidents

If you do the math, this drops the 30,000 number to 5,100. If you look at the homicide rates of Chicago (480), Baltimore (344), Detroit (333) and in Washington D.C. (119), the total equals out to right around 25% of most gun crimes occurring in 4 cities that are known to have very strict gun laws.

These are just the gun related deaths in America. Not to mention that over 40,000 people die from drug overdose every year while over 34,000 die from the flu and about the same amount die from automotive and traffic death. 710,000 people have been reported to have died from heart disease.

Maybe we need some other 'controls' rather than our guns. There is probably more data out there, but these are some studies done to get you to think whether or not you support gun control.
