Cheyenne Botanic Gardens Executive Director Shane Smith says it's not true that you can't plant a garden in Wyoming before Memorial Day.

Smith says that while that is a common misconception, the fact is that you can plant many flowers and vegetables right now. Smith says that includes most root vegetables except for onions as well as many cold-resistant flowers such as pansies and many perennials. Besides root crops he says other food crops that you can plant now include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kohlrabi and peas.

Smith says that while many people think you have to rototill ground before planting, in most cases you are actually better off breaking ground with a shovel. Recent studies have shown that rototilling actually is bad for the soil and tends to reduce yields in most cases.
