Jimmy Page Releases New Rap Mash-Up, ‘Ramblize’

This is bound to offend some of the purists out there, but it’s still newsworthy. Jimmy Page has released a mash-up of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Ramble On’ and the Notorious B.I.G.’s 1996 smash hit ‘Hypnotize.’

‘Ramblize’ features the late hip-hop star rapping his hit on top of Page’s famous acoustic guitar part. Samples of Robert Plant’s vocals are used as accents, most notably the line, “Sometimes I grow so tired.”

Page uploaded the track to the homepage of his website on Friday (Nov. 15) with the message “On this day Biggie Smalls,” even though Nov. 15 was neither Biggie’s birthday nor the anniversary of his death. It has since been replaced by something different, but can now be heard at Page’s Soundcloud page.

‘Hypnotize’ was from ‘Life After Death,’ the last album Notorious B.I.G. released in his lifetime. Based on a sample from Herb Alpert’s 1979 hit, ‘Rise,’ the song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 shortly after Biggie was killed on March 9, 1997. His murder remains unsolved.

This is the second time Page has gave his seal of approval to a Led Zeppelin/hip-hop collaboration. In 1998, he recreated his guitar parts from ‘Kashmir’ for Puff Daddy’s song ‘Come with Me’ for the soundtrack to the movie ‘Godzilla.’ The song reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
