John Frusciante Won’t Attend Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Rock Hall Induction

According to Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, their April 14 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction will include former members of the band, however, erstwhile guitarist John Frusciante will not be one of them.

RHCP had to again reinvent themselves on their 2011 album ‘I’m With You’ after John Frusciante exited the band for the second time — the first being his 1992 split that lasted over 6 years. The band didn’t look far for Frusciante’s replacement, drafting his good friend Josh Klinghoffer to fill the void.

After RHCP were announced among the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class of 2012, what seemed like an obvious question of Frusciante’s involvement was overshadowed in the press by a certain other inductee’s lineup (we’re looking at you Guns N’ Roses). Stick man Chad Smith tells Billboard that while former drummers Jack Irons and Cliff Martinez will join the band for the ceremony honoring their nearly 30-year history, the noteworthy former guitarist will not.

“He didn’t feel comfortable coming, which we totally respect,” Smith says. “We asked him… He said, ‘I’m just not really comfortable with that, but good luck and thanks for inviting me.’ It was all good. He’s the kind of guy, I think, that once he’s finished with something he’s just on to the next phase of his life. The Chili Peppers are not really on his radar right now.”

“The next phase” Smith refers to likely being Frusciante’s solo career — he has released 10 solo albums since 1994 and is currently prepping his eleventh for a 2012 release.

Despite the pending release of ‘Brendan’s Death Song,’ their fourth single from ‘I’m With You,’ the Rock Hall induction, and upcoming North American tour, the Chili Peppers are already looking to the future.”We just rehearsed and came up with some ideas and new song ideas and stuff and played together for two weeks, and it was really fun,” says Smith. “The future is bright.”
