Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen says he supports a proposal in the state legislature to increase the gasoline tax by ten cents a gallon.

The mayor says highways and roads across the state are deteriorating, and notes that under the proposal local governments would receive part of the money raised for local infrastructure work. Kaysen says that while no one is happy about paying more for fuel, he doesn't think the state can continue to ignore what he says is the widespread deterioration of roads and highways.

Kaysen does say that it's difficult to calculate how much money the tax would cost the city in terms of increased fuel costs for city vehicles, but adds he thinks the benefits of funding for road and street improvements would outweigh the increased fuel costs over the long term.
