Laramie County Clerk Debra Lee says anyone who has an absentee ballot that they are planning to mail to her office should make sure it gets mailed no later than Monday, Aug. 13.

While that guideline is a recommendation and not a requirement, the county clerk says those who mail their ballots after Aug. 13 run the risk of not having their vote counted.

“Our mail goes to Denver for processing and postal officials have advised us to allow seven days for mail to reach its destination.  It’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to making sure your ballot reaches our office in time to be counted,” Lee said.

Absentee voters who cannot get their ballot mailed by August 13 are being advised to hand deliver their ballots to the clerk's office at the Laramie County Governmental Complex at 309 W.20th Street. The office is open weekdays from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Ballots that are not received by 7 p.m. on August 21 (primary election day) will not be counted. Lee also refuted a common belief that absentee ballots are only counted if there is a close election. "That’s not true, said Lee.  “Every vote counts, whether it is cast in person or by absentee ballot.”

Those who want to vote before election day also have the option of voting in the Atrium of the governmental complex between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4;45 p.m. through Monday, August 20.
