Laramie County Sheriff: Transgender Bathroom Issue Difficult

Laramie County Sheriff Danny Glick says he's not sure how to handle the issue of which bathrooms transgender students are allowed to use.

The Sheriff says before he can answer the question he would need to consult with both the Cheyenne Police Department as well as Laramie County School District #1, adding at this point "we're working through" the transgender bathroom issue.

He says if his department received a call about someone who appeared to be of one gender using a bathroom designated for the other "I just don't know how to answer that. I can't play what if."

He says one consideration might be whether any kind of ''touching" or similar behavior was reported. The sheriff said one possible solution might be more "family bathrooms" that would be available to everyone.

He also says the likely first step if his department did get such a call would be "an intervention to make sure the kids are safe...is it someone who needs some counseling because there are issues there?"

Glick said indecent exposure laws are still on the books, but added what laws are on the books isn't necessarily the only issue that dictates what must be done in a given situation.

But the sheriff praised Governor Matt Mead and Superintendent Jillian Balow for pushing back on federal directives to allow transgender people to use the school bathroom of the sex they identify as.

Glick says the bottom line is that society in general and Wyoming specifically are going to have to settle the issue, which in the meantime poses a question for local law enforcement.
