A Laramie man is dead after his motorcycle hit the back of a commercial truck on Interstate 80 Wednesday afternoon.

Christopher De Young, 43, died around 2 p.m. near mile post 315 on I-80 westbound near the east end of Laramie, according to a news release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

De Young was riding a 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle at highway speeds in the right westbound lane and crashed into the back of a trailer towed by a slow-moving 2016 Kenworth commercial truck driven by 43-year-old Eric Curren of Shawnee, Okla.

De Young was thrown from the motorcycle. He died at the scene, despite wearing a helmet.

Curren and his passenger, 45-year-old Darren Kennedy of Lake Worth, Fla., were not hurt.

No charges have been filed, according to the news release.

Patrol Sgt. David Wagener says once the investigation is complete, investigating troopers will present their report to the Albany County Attorney for review.

"At that point, it would be up to the Albany County Attorney's Office whether any charges would be pursued or filed at that point," Wagener said.

Wagener said he believes the commercial truck was traveling at roughly 40 mph in the 75 mph speed zone where the crash occurred, but he did not know why.

De young was the 85th person killed on Wyoming highways this year, and the 22nd motorcyclist. The same time period in 2015 saw 113 highway deaths statewide.

The westbound lanes of I-80 were closed for about two hours following the crash. Traffic was diverted through Laramie as troopers investigated and then cleared the scene.
