Wyoming congresswoman Cynthia Lummis says that while she doesn't want to see cuts in benefits to current Medicare and Medicaid recipients, the math says changes must be made to the programs over the long-term if they are to survive.

Lummis says demographics, and especially the large number of baby boomers who are collecting Medicare or soon will be, means the program is not financially viable without some kind of changes being made.

She says far more general fund money is currently being put into the program to pay benefits than has been collected. Lummis says the financial status of the Medicaid program is even shakier, and says other entitlement programs, including Social Security disability programs, are going to need reforms as well.
