Stamp Out Hunger, the largest food drive in the Cheyenne area, is celebrating 23 years on Saturday, May 9.

Local letter carriers will collect non-perishable food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes.

People are being asked to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, canned meats and fish, pasta, rice or cereal next to their mailbox right before normal mail delivery.

COMEA House, Needs Inc., Safehouse Services, The Salvation Army, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Boys & Girls Club of Cheyenne, and Wyoming Coalition for the Homeless will benefit from the 2015 donations.

Helping  the local National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) branch will be rural letter carriers and other postal employees, plus members of other volunteer organizations.

People who have questions about the drive should ask their letter carrier or contact United Way of Laramie County at 638-8904.

Last year, letter carriers across the nation collected 72 million pounds of food donations along their postal routes. Annually, Laramie County residents donate more than 27,000 pounds during the drive.

The annual food drive comes at a time of year when most food banks have depleted the donations received in end-of-the-year holiday drives, according to United Way spokeswoman Sara Weber.
