A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to three to five years in prison for possession with intent to deliver marijuana.

Michael T. Chappelear was arrested on November 29, 2015, after a Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper pulled him over for speeding on Interstate 80 about five miles west of Cheyenne and found 74.5 pounds of marijuana in his car.

"I was a certified marijuana driver in California," Chappelear said during his sentencing Monday in Laramie County District Court.

Chappelear told Judge Steven Sharpe that he was transporting the marijuana from California to Colorado when winter weather forced him to change his route and come through Wyoming.

"Every ounce was intended for Colorado," said Chappelear's attorney, James Learned, who basically called his client stupid. "I would recommend two to three years."

Chappelear apologized for his actions and said he violated his bond because he was trying to support his fiancee and their baby.

"You violated your bond in a big way," said Sharpe, who agreed with both Learned and Assistant Laramie County District Attorney Ryan Wright that Chappelear was "not appropriate for probation" and sentenced him to prison.
