A former Cheyenne man who stole checks from a Board of Public Utilities payment drop box in October 2016 was sentenced Tuesday in Laramie County District Court to three years of probation.

Nicholas Hill, 29, pleaded guilty in May to two counts of forgery, admitting to knowingly and willingly passing checks that weren't written to him.

In exchange for his plea, the state agreed to dismiss two other forgery counts and recommend a sentence of three to five years suspended in favor of four years of supervised probation.

But because Hill was jailed in Colorado and failed to show up at his sentencing in August, the state on Tuesday asked Judge Steven Sharpe for imposed time.

"What he plead guilty to are his eighth and ninth felonies," said Assistant District Attorney Caitlin Harper. "He was given a chance (but) couldn't keep it together."

"I messed up and I'm here to apologize," said Hill. "I will take full responsibility and pay restitution to my victims."

Sharpe hesitantly gave Hill what he called a "great break" and sentenced him to three years of supervised probation with the condition he complete CTC. He also ordered Hill to pay $600 in restitution.

"If you're not successful on probation you should expect to serve the underlying sentence," Sharpe told Hill.
