Former Major League Baseball slugger David Ortiz officially retired after the 2016 Boston Red Sox season ended in early October.

Whether you cared for the Red Sox or not, Wyoming residents were all behind Ortiz because of his relationship with a young Cheyenne resident, Maverick.

Maverick has had a difficult seven years. He's faced over thirty surgeries because of a heart defect, and has spent a major part of his life in hospitals. One of his favorite escapes from his hectic life is through sports, in particular baseball's Boston Red Sox.

When Ortiz heard Maverick's story earlier this year, he recorded a video and promised that he'd hit him a home run, which he delivered on.  The Red Sox organization then invited Maverick and his family to visit them in Boston and take in a game at Fenway Park. Maverick had the chance to hang out with Big Papi, tour the ballpark, and throw out the first pitch.

After the season, the list of Esurance MLB Awards came out to honor baseball's greatest moments. Maverick's story and Ortiz's kindness were recognized as the winner of the "Best Player/Fan Interaction" award.
