Metallica Cover the Beatles, Deep Purple, Ozzy Osbourne, and Rare Earth During Acoustic Benefit Set

While Ozzy Osbourne may have been the guest of honor at this year’s MusiCares benefit, everyone in attendance was treated to a memorable night of live music — including the chance to see Metallica deliver a four-song acoustic set that featured some intriguing covers.

As we previously reported, the May 12 event — which marks the organization’s 10th annual gala — played host to a lineup of live performers that included Metallica, Osbourne (featuring Slash), and blues artist Keb’ Mo’, all in the name of raising money for the fund dedicated to providing programs and services to members of the music community, including emergency financial assistance. Osbourne was honored alongside Village studios owner/CEO Jeff Greenberg, with Osbourne lauded for his efforts on behalf of the MusiCares MAP Fund, which provides access to addiction recovery treatment.

“We are so proud to be a part of the tenth annual MusiCares MAP Fund benefit concert,” Metallica said in a statement. “It’s no secret that Ozzy has been a major presence throughout our entire lives and we are so humbled and honored to be with Ozzy for this special evening.”

The band made things a little more special by putting together a short covers set that included Metallica-ized acoustic versions of the Beatles‘ ‘In My Life’ (embedded above), Deep Purple‘s ‘When a Blind Man Cries,’ Rare Earth’s ‘I Just Want to Celebrate,’ and Osbourne’s ‘Diary of a Madman,’ as well as a bit of the Led Zeppelin classic ‘Stairway to Heaven.’ And even if you weren’t lucky enough to be in the crowd, don’t fret — you can still watch fan footage of the show courtesy of YouTube user InvisibleKidTMCC. Check out the rest of the set right here.
