Last week, officials at Devils Tower National Monument announced they were seeking public comment regarding a proposal to change the name of the landmark to Bear Lodge.

According to a poll conducted by Townsquare Media, an overwhelming majority of Wyoming residents oppose the name change. In the poll, which was published on 11 TSM websites covering Casper, Cheyenne and Laramie, nearly 95% of respondents were not in favor of changing the name.

The request for the name change came from the Native American spiritual leader Arvol Looking Horse. While the National Park Service has no official position on the proposed change, an executive order or act of Congress would be required in order to officially rename the national monument.
