Cheyenne Botanic Gardens[/caption]Cheyenne Botanic Gardens Director Shane Smith says a new insect pest, which could threaten ash trees, will likely arrive in Laramie County before long.

The Emerald Ash Borer is a native of Russia, which was first seen in the United States in Michigan in 2002. The insect has since spread as far west as Boulder County, Colorado, killing tens of millions of ash trees along the way.

Local officials are keeping an eye out for the borer, and planning a spraying regimen to combat the insect once it arrives.

Smith says the borer is "a tough critter" and will be a challenge to deal with.
