Orb has won the 139th Kentucky Derby on Saturday.

The 5-1 favorite pulled ahead down the stretch on a muddy course after several other horses, including Verrazano, Falling Sky and Palace Malice each took turns claiming the lead. At one point, Orb was in 15th place before eventually making its move. Down the stretch Normandy Invasion pulled ahead, but couldn’t fend off Orb, who rocketed to the front on the outside.

It’s the first victory in the Run for the Roses for jockey Joel Rosario, as well as Orb’s Hall of Fame trainer, Shug McGaughey.

Rosario said, “I was really far back. I said hopefully he can go faster than that. I was saying maybe I was too far back, but it was so easy.”

Orb ran the the course in 2:02.89 and paid $12.80.

Golden Soul finished in second and Revolutionary took third.

Goldencents, a horse who’s owned in part by Louisville men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino, was not a factor and finished 17th.

Rosie Napravnik, who was gunning to be the first woman jockey to win the prestigious race, earned a fifth-place showing riding Mylute.

Orb will continue the quest for the Triple Crown in two weeks at the Preakness Stakes. No horse has won the Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978.
