Cheyenne Police Department spokesman Officer Dan Long says bicyclists on city streets need to follow traffic laws for their own safety.

Long says that includes being predictable. That includes using hand signals before changing lanes, following the flow of traffic, and obeying stoplights and stop signs at intersections. Many bicyclists are injured because they suddenly dart into traffic, change lanes without signaling, or ignore traffic lights and run intersections unpredictably.

Beyond following traffic rules, Long advises bicyclists to wear helmets and drive defensively.

Finally, Long says it's illegal for bicyclists to ride on the sidewalk i9n the Cheyenne business district. He says that area is bordered by the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, 24th street, Bent Avenue and Evans Avenue.

Bicyclists are allowed to ride on sidewalks in other parts of the city as well as on the Cheyenne Greenway.
