Cheyenne residents should start seeing some progress on the above-the-ground portion of the new Public Safety Building, according to Cheyenne Police Lt. Mark Munari.

Laramie County voters in 2012 approved spending $25 million in sixth-penny sales tax revenues on a new building to house the Cheyenne Police Department as well as the Cheyenne Fire&Rescue Administration and other emergency responders.

The Cheyenne City Council eventually purchased the site of the former Dinneen Car Dealership on 17th street for the new facility. The Public Safety Building will incorporate portions of the old car dealership--some of which date to the 1920's-- along with new construction.

Munari, who is Building Coordinator for the project, says most of the subsurface work is now finished and work on the project which is above ground will soon become visible. Munari says the project is slightly behind schedule, but says city officials are hoping the new building  will be finished in about a year.

He says once the department leaves it current offices on Capitol Avenue city officials will make a decision on what to do with that property.

When completed, the new facility will measure roughly 93,000 square feet and will include three floors as well as an underground parking area.
