A 39-year-old Rock Springs man was killed Sunday night in a head-on collision on Interstate 25, near Cheyenne, according to a spokesman for the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

Lt. David Wagener says Gary Osborn was driving north in the southbound lane of I-25 at a little before midnight when his car ran into a vehicle driven by 34-year-old Omar Chavira Varela of Gillette.

Wagener notes Osborn was driving the wrong direction when he ran directly into the southbound SUV. Osborn, who was not wearing his seat belt, was not thrown from his vehicle but suffered fatal injuries in the crash. He died at the scene.

Varela and his passenger, 21-year-old Miguel Chavira Gonzalez, who is also from Gillette, were both wearing their seat belts. They were taken to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center where they were treated and released. The accident happened at mile post 15 just north of Cheyenne.

Lt. Wagener says impaired driving is being investigated as a possible factor in the crash.

He says 21 people have now died on Wyoming highways so far this year, compared to 11 deaths this time last year, 27 in 2015 and 28 by this time in 2014.
