The Coordinator for Safe Kids Wyoming and a spokesman for the Wyoming State Fire Marshall’s office are reminding people to be careful with fireworks this July 4th.

Stephanie Heitsch of Safe Kids Wyoming says children should never be allowed to play with fireworks and should only be allowed to watch adults use fireworks from a safe distance. Heitsch says in 2011, an estimated 2,500 children age 15 and under were treated for injuries in emergency rooms in the U.S.

She cites figures from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission which say that 30 percent of fireworks injuries that year involved children 15 and under. The same report says 60 percent of U.S. fireworks injuries that year were to extremities, such as hands and feet, while 35 percent of reported fireworks injuries were head injuries.

Meanwhile, Brad Carroll with the Wyoming State Fire Marshall’s Office is reminding people to avoid using fireworks around any kind of flammable materials. Carroll says aerial fireworks especially pose a fire hazard because it can be difficult to predict where they will go.

The possession, use or sale of fireworks is illegal within the city limits of Cheyenne. There is a legal fireworks show scheduled  for Frontier Park on July 4th, with the gates opening at 5:30, live entertainment from local bands at 6:30 and the fireworks show slated to begin at 9:35 pm.The free show is presented by Cheyenne Frontier Days and the City of Cheyenne.
