Spring is four weeks old but winter is like a bad brother-in-law that won’t leave. It’s alright, we need the moisture. We’ll get to the forecast in a moment.

The Cheyenne forecast issued by The National Weather Service as of 6am Saturday, April 16:

Strong storm system will impact southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska this weekend.

A prolonged snow event is underway across much of southeast Wyoming, and will continue this weekend with periods of heavy snow at times. A Pacific low pressure system is forecast to stall over Colorado with widespread heavy snowfall possible through at least Sunday afternoon. Additional snow accumulations will be possible Sunday night and Monday.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 PM MDT Sunday.

  • Timing: snow, heavy at times, will continue through tonight. Snow is expected to gradually taper off Sunday afternoon.
  • Total snow accumulations, 8 to 14 inches with locally higher amounts possible through Sunday afternoon. Additional snow accumulations will be possible Sunday night and Monday.
  • Winds/visibility: north to northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph will be possible through Sunday morning. The combination of strong winds and heavy snow could reduce visibilities around one quarter mile at times.
  • Impacts: The combination of heavy snow and strong winds will create dangerous travel due to low visibilities and drifting snow. Travel Delays and road closures will be possible. This storm could also pose a significant threat to livestock, and cause power outages.

Recommended actions

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow. Blowing and drifting snow are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible tonight through Saturday night.

At this writing at 6 am, we have 32°, putting us on a tipping point between rain and snow.
