SNL: Miley Cyrus Shuts Down the Government With “We Did Stop”

When ‘SNL‘ is on point, there are few live, late night variety shows that skewer American politics so well (but then again, it really does have that category all to itself). There was no way the show was going to miss an opportunity to make fun of the recent government shutdown and there was no way they weren’t going to use guest host Miley Cyrus to help do it. The result? A truly bizarre and inspired parody of the music video for Cyrus’ “We Don’t Stop,” which puts Michele Bachmann and John Boehner front and center. Naturally, the new song is called “We Did Stop.”

Cyrus takes on Bachmann and Taran Killam takes on Boehner, with both of them throwing themselves into their roles with abandon. Using the grotesque hard partying of the original music video as a jumping-off point, the scene follows the two of them as they dance the night away and get involved in all kinds of hip/disturbing situations. The already creepy elements of Cyrus’ song and its video only become creepier when the young pop star at the center is replaced with the Speaker of the House and a notably crazy congresswoman. In fact, the depiction of the Republican party as an actual party celebrating the shutdown of the government may be one of the nuttiest and weirdest political statements ‘SNL’ has made in ages.

On the technical side, the sketch captures the tone of the music video with eerie accuracy, but it’s a shame that the song itself isn’t too catchy. Unlike the ‘SNL’ work from Lonely Island, you won’t want to have “We Did Stop” on any playlists anytime soon. However, at the end of the day, it’s still very funny and biting satire. What more could you want?
