East High Graduation Set at Okie Blanchard Stadium Saturday, May 31
Do you have any favorite memories of Okie Blanchard Stadium?
This Saturday’s 2014 East High graduation ceremony will be one of the last events held at the 56-year-old stadium. The stadium, home to the Cheyenne East High School Thunderbirds, will be replaced by a new Okie Blanchard Stadium being built just north west of the current site.
There’s limited parking around the stadium due to construction, so shuttle buses will be available on Saturday, May 31, before and after graduation which begins at 10 a.m. Buses will run from the East student parking lot, the Jonah Bank parking lot south of Pershing and Baggs Elementary School located 2 blocks east on Cheyenne Street.
The current Okie Blanchard Stadium, off east Pershing Blvd., was built in 1958 at a cost of $190,000 and was originally named Memorial Stadium. In the 1970’s, it was renamed Okie Blanchard in honor of the long time coach at Cheyenne High School who won more than 700 basketball games and nearly 150 football games.
The new $14 million dollar Okie Blanchard Sports Complex is expected to open for the 2015 fall season.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of my Wife’s graduation from East High School at Okie Blanchard Stadium and we’ll be in the stands on Saturday to watch our daughter, Emily, receive her diploma in the same venue.
