Southwest Airlines is the final airline to make this historic change.

Have you traveled by air recently? You may have noticed something is missing. For some airlines, this product has been absent for quite some time.

Peanuts.

Beyond the absence of the actual nut, many airlines will encourage passengers to refrain from bringing peanuts on board and in instances where a passenger has an allergy, they will announce on the overhead that any nuts should remained sealed and stowed.

That's how serious peanut allergies are.

Which is the reason why airlines across the board have begun to phase them out of the snack lineup. Southwest Airlines is the final company to get on board with this idea. According to ABC News, the airline will be phasing out peanuts and flight attendants will cease serving them as early as August 1. What took them so long?

Tradition.

Southwest has been known for their peanuts and have even incorporated the legume into its marketing platforms. From the iconic red and blue bags to slogans like "Nuts About Southwest", peanuts have been synonymous with the carrier. It's a move made after 47 years and a decision that didn't come easy according to a recent statement.

We've made the difficult decision to discontinue serving peanuts on all flights. Peanuts forever will be part of Southwest's history and DNA.

Of course, as with many companies, the goal is customer safety and satisfaction.
