CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - Wyoming lawmakers are considering spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to help preserve historic documents and artifacts.

State Parks and Cultural Resources has requested nearly $500,000 for the final stage of setting up a new electronic archive system.

Parks Director Milward Simpson says the archive system is his agency's top exception request for the 2017-18 budget.  At a Joint Appropriations Committee budget hearing Tuesday, he said the system is crucial for moving Wyoming into the modern age.

The Legislature has already spent $2.5 million to study and begin rolling out the system over the past several years.

Governor Matt Mead is supporting approval of the request.  The Appropriations Committee will meet early next year to vote on Mead's recommendations before the full legislative session.
