Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Dale Steenbergen says he thinks new Cheyenne Mayor Marian Orr is creating a more business-friendly environment at city hall.

Steenbergen had frequent disagreements with former Mayor Rick Kaysen over what Steenbergen felt were burdensome regulations and sometimes hostile attitudes on the part of those charged with enforcing the rules towards local businesses. Kaysen repeatedly denied those charges.

Kaysen left office in January after two terms as Mayor of Cheyenne.

But Steenbergen says he has been "very encouraged" by some of the changes Orr has made in the roughly two months she has been in office. He has seen a "new environment" and a "pro-business kind of attitude which he says represents a shift from recent city policy on business issues.

He says the next step is for local business owners to tell city officials about some of the challenges they face so that rules that are hurting local businesses can be changed. Steenbergen says one problem with current city regulations on the outward appearance of businesses. He says no business owner takes the attitude that "I want to make this look as bad as I can."

But he says the city would be well-served by allowing business owners to use their own creativity rather than being over-regulated at every step by city codes.
