Laramie County School District#1 Superintendent Mark Stock says both ends of the political spectrum try to influence education.

Stock says that while the situation can be frustrating for educators, it may be difficult to change because of how American school systems are run. He added that when conservatives are in power, they tend to push for things like the pledge of allegiance and moments of silence.

When liberal politicians are elected they want to use the classroom to promote ideals of diversity and multicultural education. He says both agendas often annoy teachers who tire of taking time away from teaching subject matter and feel education is "being used as a political football".

But he says as long as American schools are run by elected officials, as opposed to appointed experts as is the case in many countries, the situation may not change.
