Laramie County School District#1 Superintendent John Lyttle says that while he supports the right to keep and bear arms, he's concerned about legislation that would allow people to carry guns into schools as well as most other public buildings.

A bill that has passed the state house and is now pending in the Wyoming Senate would allow people with concealed carry permits to carry guns into schools as well as most other public buildings except courtrooms.

While no one under 21 can get a concealed carry permit under Wyoming law, Lyttle says he's spoken to people in the insurance industry who say the legislation could lead, at worst, to a cancellation of the district's insurance.

He says even if that doesn't happen he was told the policy would lead to an increase in the cost of insurance.

The Superintendent says another potential problem is people with weapons getting angry at coaches or officials at sports events. He says there have been times when people have lost their tempers at games, and having those people armed would make the situation much worse.

Lyttle says another potential problem is confrontations between former spouses on school grounds, which have the potential to turn deadly if one or both are armed. Finally, Lyttle says accidents with guns are always a concern.

Supporters of the legislation say an armed public actually would improve safety by giving people the ability to defend themselves or others against armed attackers or terrorists.
