Ever try to have a surprise party for someone and it doesn't go exactly as planned?

My husband had one of those “milestone birthdays” coming up, so I wanted to have a surprise birthday party, and it went off without a hitch, sort of!

I was to get him over to the Redwood Lounge Sunday by 12:30 p.m., but at 11 a.m., he decided to go back to bed, UUUG!  Then when I tried to motivate him to get out of bed and hit the shower, I found him outside sweating in the sun while pulling weeds.  By this time it was almost 12 p.m.  I thought I was going to lose it!

Our good friends Tina and Nathan came up from Ft. Collins, Colorado, and Tina and I worked out a plan for the surprise.  She was going to go “shopping” Sunday morning, and instead, would pick up the cakes, and sneak over to the Redwood Lounge to decorate.  She kept in contact with me throughout the day, and as the clock was ticking away, I texted her to see if people had shown up yet, and she texted back “not yet.”  By this time, I was a nervous wreck.  Not only was I having a hard time getting my husband up and around, it was getting closer to “party time,” and nobody was there yet.

Tina and I cooked up a little plan where she would call Steve and tell him that her car “broke down,” and that she needed us to help her.  She would conveniently be broken down in the parking lot of the Redwood Lounge.  As I was worried about whether people were going to show or not, they all showed up at once, and that prompted Tina to make the call.

My husband, along with our good friend Nathan and I got into our truck to “rescue” Tina.  Since Nathan was helping Steve in the yard, neither one of them got a chance to take a shower, so I was sitting in the middle of 2 sweaty guys.  But it all turned out good, because we got him over there and he was indeed surprised.  I, on the other hand, was completely exhausted!

Have you ever tried to pull off a surprise party for someone?  How did it work out for you?
