Sweetwater County authorities are looking for witnesses to a knife attack that happened in Farson on May 14, according to a spokesman for the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Department,

Dick Blust says 36-year-old Jose Alfredo Mendoza was arrested on the afternoon of the 14th for attacking Joshua Bennett of Rock Springs with a knife at the Farson Feed Store.

Blust says Mendoza was also wanted for a parole violation on an original charge of manslaughter.

Blust says court records show Mendoza was convicted in Natrona County District Court in December 2004 for the 2003 death of his 6-month-old son J.J. Mendoza Jr., who died of a brain injury.

Jose Mendoza was released from prison on June 22, 2015.

Blust says Jose Mendoza was also convicted of an undisclosed felony in Fillmore County, Utah. He is charged with aggravated assault in connection with the May 14 incident.

Under Wyoming law that carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison, a $10,000 fine or both. But because of Mendoza's criminal history, the Sweetwater County Attorney's Office wants to try him as a habitual criminal, which carries a potential penalty of 10 to 50 years in prison.

Blust says Mendoza is being held at the Sweetwater County jail on a $150,000 bond. Anyone who may have information on the alleged assault in Farson is being asked to call Detective Steve Powell at (307) 875-1400.
