Two-time Wyoming gubernatorial candidate and conservative activist Dr. Taylor Haynes on Monday endorsed Darin Smith in his campaign for Wyoming's lone congressional seat.

Haynes, who is a physician and rancher, called Smith "a Wyoming person who has what I call a Wyoming heart."  By contrast, Haynes said Liz Cheney, one of Smith's rivals for the GOP congressional nomination, is running on her family name and has a background of "being embedded in the beltway as a federal bureaucrat."

He went on to say of Cheney "if you've raised most of your money in Chicago and other places I'm pretty sure you're not running for us, you're running for your handlers."

Haynes castigated state legislators Rep. Tim Stubson (R-Natrona County) and Sen. Leland Christensen (R-Teton County) for supporting Senate File 104 in the legislature.

That bill, which was signed into law by Governor Matt Mead, but later struck down by the Wyoming Supreme Court, would have taken most of the duties of the state Superintendent of Public Instruction and given them to an administrator appointed by the governor.

Haynes also accused Christensen of being "anti-constitution" and specifically opposed to the second amendment for voting against proposals to allow Wyoming residents to carry guns into public meetings.

Haynes said Smith meanwhile gets top ratings for his support of "the Constitution and our God-fearing, Judeo-Christian ethics."

Wyoming's primary election on Tuesday, Aug. 16 will choose Republican and Democratic nominees for Wyoming's lone seat in the U.S. House. Incumbent Republican Rep. Cynthia Lummis is not running for re-election.
