When the government won't properly take care of those who have served our country, that's when we look to local, Cheyenne residents who put it together for them.

That's what Glen Chavez and his team are doing again this year for veterans, without the help of the city of Cheyenne.

Back in 2009, Glen and his wife had the idea of doing something nice for our veterans. Only about 50 people had shown up at their first Thanksgiving meal.

Glen, a barber by trade, was cutting the hair of a young airman. The airman shared about how the holidays were a lonely time, as he would be away from home and being here was just not the same as being at home with family and friends.

About 3 weeks prior to Thanksgiving, Glen had received word from the airman's roommate, that the man had committed suicide. That was Glen's "A-ha Moment." As the roommate cried in Glen's shoulder he asked him what he was doing for Thanksgiving.

Chavez went to F.E. Warren AFB and promoted the Thanksgiving Dinner for Veterans, and the annual dinner grew from 50, in 2009, to over 2500 in 2010. Much preparation happens every year along with volunteers and donations to help out veterans and their families.

This year, the tradition continues as Glen and his team will have another dinner for those families here in the Cheyenne area. The dinner, this year, will be held on Thanksgiving Day, from 1 - 4:30 p.m. at 5500 Bishop Blvd - the U.S. Army Armory.
