There's plenty of national chain sandwich shops here in Cheyenne. The Great Harvest Bread Company is always good, Quizno's is "mmm, toasty", and the Jimmy John's delivery guy is lightning fast. Don't even get me started on Arby's curly fries.

However, when it comes to locally owned, mom and pop sandwich shops, the pickings are slim. Here's my completely subjective list of the 5 Best Locally Owned Sandwiches in the Capital City.

1. Little Philly - Over the years, this place has become a Cheyenne institution. Admittedly, it's a dive. But when you're hungry for a Philly cheese steak or a Chicago Dog, it's your best bet. And don't forget to order a side of pierogies with butter and sour creme.

2. The Albany - This historic downtown bar and restaurant isn't a sandwich shop, but they have some of the biggest, and best, homestyle sandwiches in town. The open faced turkey sandwich comes smothered in gravy and mashed potatoes and tastes like Thanksgiving dinner on a bun. Same goes for the roast beef. Bring your appetite for this one, because it's a gut buster.

3. Mitchell's BBQ - Like The Albany, Mitchell's isn't just a sandwich shop. But this traditional BBQ shop makes the list for its decadent 'Sloppy Hog'. A giant mound of pulled pork, piled high on a bun and covered in cole slaw. Grab an extra napkin, because you might end up wearing this one on your shirt.

4. Crow Creek Meat Processing - Timing is everything at this meat market on Ridge Road. They're not a sandwich shop, in fact, most days they don't even make them. However, if you show up on a Wednesday or Friday, they're serving up amazing sandwiches with the freshest meat you'll find anywhere. If only they served them all the time.

5. The Daily Press Food Truck - Like Crow Creek, this food truck will require some effort to track down. But where else in Cheyenne are you going to find a Vietnamese Bahn Mi Sandwich? Look for them parked downtown on weekends and around town at various community events.

Honorable Mention: There are several bakeries that arguably belong on this list. The Bread Basket and Mort's Bagels both offer a variety of fantastic sandwiches in addition to their other freshly made products. And who could forget the venerable Pie Lady? As good as her pastries and pies are, her sandwiches are among the best in town.
