Cyber-thieves steal personal health information, credit card information or hack into movie secrets. Now the I.R.S. is the next victim to feel the heat from these hackers.  According to I.R.S. Commissioner John Koskinen, who provided an update of the damage wrought by cyber-thieves, his biggest concern is for the affected taxpayers, to ensure that they are protected against this type of fraud in the future.

Cyber-thieves are responsible for the biggest I.R.S. data breach, who stole as much as $39 million by filing fraudulent tax refunds, once they successfully gained access to taxpayer information.

Commissioner Koskinen did admit that the thieves made about 200,000 attempts to get our information through the I.R.S. "Get Transcript" applications. The application is an interactive program that allows for taxpayers to acquire copies of our own federal tax returns from years past.

Even though the hackers achieved part of their goal, they did not attempt to acquire access to the I.R.S.'s main computer system that handles all tax fillings, according to Koskinen.
