A few years ago, a 12 year old girl found herself leaving her home and influenced by a 21 year old man. She was taken to a motel and molested. How did this happen?

In this particular case, the app Whisper was the culprit that the girl had downloaded on her hand-held device. This is one of many dangerous apps on the market, that could compromise the safety of your child.

  1. Whisper - The app allows you to post as "anonymous" and allows you to hold conversations with people in your immediate area. Most kids like to communicate with people, however strangers may be in that mix, unbeknownst to them.
  2. YikYak - This is an app that people can join as anonymous with no account or personal profile needed. This particular app has been causing some problems in schools across America. On psychiatrist called this one of the most dangerous apps he'd ever seen as, in his observation, can turn a local school into a virtual chat room. A potential 500 people can see one post that could smear a child or put them in danger in and around their school or area.
  3. Snapchat - This is a very popular app which enables the user to post a video or photo image and make it available for a specific time frame. It has been proven that the app has been misused with kids posting or receiving sexually explicit photos along with "sexting" images.
  4. Kik - No logged in phone history allows kids to talk to strangers without a parents knowledge as it bypasses the wireless providers SMS - Short Message Service.
  5. Vine - This app allows kids to post and watch 6 second videos, which can be shared with complete strangers. In essence, your child or teenager could be chatting with a 45 year old man, who puts a video or photo of a 16 year old boy or girl that they "seems" to be chatting with.

The bottom line is that your child's safety is your business, even at the expense of their privacy. Please be vigilant and walk circumspect when it comes to computers and hand-held devices that your children may be entertained with in your home.
