An online survey conducted over the last three days on the Townsquare Media of Cheyenne websites found the condition of city streets, and potholes in particular, to be the top challenge facing the city.

Just under 25 percent of those responding cited the seemingly never-ending potholes and city streets in general to be the biggest challenge that will face the city in 2017 when a new mayor assumes office.

The local economy and downtown revitalization efforts tied for second place in the survey, with just a little over 18 percent of people responding city those areas as being major concerns. Just under 15 percent cited the budget challenges faced by local government in light of declining revenues as the top issue.

Just under 8 percent said drug abuse is the biggest issue facing the city in 2017. And despite several recent shooting incidents in the city, only a little over 4 percent of those responding said they think violent crime is the number one problem in Cheyenne.

Just over 12 percent of respondents checked the "other" category. Those respondents had the option of writing in their own answer to the question of the biggest problem facing the city.

Some of those answers included "incompetence" "fear of change" "fear of ourselves" "Old politicians, the root of all ills" and "need a rec center." Cheyenne voters have rejected funding for a proposed rec center three times in recent years, with none of the votes being especially close.

The survey was conducted on Friday through Monday on the websites for radio stations KGAB-AM, 106.3 Cowboy Country and 101.9 King FM. The poll was also posted on the KGAB facebook page
