U2 Push Back Release of New Album, Now Due in 2015

So far, 2014 has been a busy year for U2. They debuted a new song, ‘Invisible,’ during a Super Bowl ad, performed at the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards and helped mark Jimmy Fallon’s debut of ‘The Tonight Show.‘ But all this recent movement isn’t leading up to a new album or tour.

According to Billboard, U2 have set 2015 as the target year for a new record and tour. The band has been working with producer Danger Mouse since last year, but work apparently continues, and any plans of having a new album out this year have been scrapped. Even though Danger Mouse is still in the producer’s chair, U2 are also working with producers Ryan Tedder and Paul Epworth at some sessions.

Though there was never a specific, or even general, date for the new album, it was certainly implied that there would be one sooner rather than later — like, sometime in 2014.

At a press conference held at the Toronto Film Festival in 2011, Bono expressed concerns over the relevance of the band after 30-plus years, stating, “There’s a giant chasm between the very good and the great, and U2 right now has a danger of surrendering to the very good.” As Billboard notes, each of the last three U2 albums have sold considerably less than the one that came out before it.

‘Invisible’ was briefly made available as a free download on iTunes on the day of the Super Bowl. It reportedly was downloaded more than 3 million times in a 24-hour span. Since then, it’s sold around 64,000 copies. With no specific date set for the new album, the band’s next tour, originally scheduled for this fall, has been pushed back to at least summer 2015.
