A man wanted for armed robbery in Utah was captured early Tuesday in Rock Springs, according to Sweetwater County Sheriff Mike Lowell.

The sheriff says deputies were alerted a little after 6 a.m. to be on the lookout for a stolen 2018 Chevy Traverse with Utah license plates. The alert said the driver was wanted in an armed robbery.

Since the vehicle was equipped with an onboard electronic tracking device, deputy David Henderson was quickly able to find the vehicle just south of Rock Springs.

Sheriff's deputies and Rock Springs Police officers arrived on the scene and arrested the driver, 46-year-old Richard Brandon Mendoza of Sparks, Nevada.

The sheriff says Mendoza at first refused to get out of the vehicle but changed his mind when deputies threatened to unleash a police dog. The sheriff's office is working with Utah authorities to further investigate the charges against Mendoza.
