You may have taken a trip and set your eyes on some really nice grass in other parts of the country. However, there are types of grasses that do better here in Wyoming.  Because of the zone we live in, there are grasses that do better in Wyoming than others. Horticulturists say that we are in Zone 5a or 5b here in Cheyenne. Other parts of the state show a Zone 3 or 4.

So what grass will do the best here in Cheyenne. There are a few that will do well here and will look really nice, once you get it planted and it begins to take off.

One of the most common - cool season - yard grass in Wyoming is Kentucky Bluegrass. As you drive around, you might see neighbors with a blue hue in their yard. This type of grass picks up speed toward the end of the summer season, but grows slower at the beginning.

If you live in an area, where water is a bit more scarce or if there are major water restrictions, you may want to plant more Native Grasses such as Buffalo and Wheat grass. These do well with less water.

And lastly, Fine Fescues is another option, if you don't care for the Kentucky Bluegrass. These grasses are great drought resisters and have good shade tolerances. They also do well in lower areas where the transition zones are too cool in the winter and too hot in the summer.

Summer time is probably the best time to be planting your warm season grasses like Buffalo Grass. However, fall and spring are the best times to plant your cool season grasses like Fine Fescues, Kentucky Bluegrass and Rye Grass.
