Watch ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic’s New ‘Lame Claim to Fame’ Video
Let’s run down “Weird Al” Yankovic eight-videos-in-eight-days project, shall we? So far, we have ‘Tacky’ (a parody of Pharrell Williams’ ‘Happy’), ‘Word Crimes’ (Robin Thicke‘s ‘Blurred Lines’), ‘Foil’ (Lorde‘s ‘Royals’), ‘Handy’ (Iggy Azaela‘s ‘Fancy’), ‘Sports Song‘ (an original song about how much your favorite team sucks) and ‘First World Problems‘ (another original, albeit with a riff borrowed from the Pixies).
The first four days were all parodies — what Yankovic does best — while the past three days have been original songs. Today’s, ‘Lame Claim to Fame,’ takes a sleazy, swampy rock beat and throws a bunch of lyrics about, well, lame claims to fame, on top of it.
“One time I was in the checkout line behind Steven Seagal / Once, I’m pretty sure Mr. Jonah Hill was in the very next bathroom stall,” he sings. “My birthday and Kim Kardashian’s are exactly the same / … I don’t mean to brag, but Paul Giamatti’s plumber knows me by name.”
Like many of the new videos Yankovic has premiered this week, ‘Lame Claim to Fame’ skewers pop culture with both insight and humor. And with today’s blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Internet culture, this one makes even more sense. You can watch the video above.
