Over the years, many movies have been filmed or set here in the Cowboy State, including several terrifying sci-fi and horror thrillers. Which Wyoming flick is the scariest?

Here are the contenders:

Close Encounters of the Third Kind – This epic Steven Spielberg production famously features the Devils Tower National Monument as the backdrop for a frightening tale of alien abduction.

Endangered Species – This 1982 movie, filmed in Buffalo, starred Robert Urich as a New York cop investigating a series of cattle mutilations in the west.

Joy Ride - This 2001 thriller starred the late Paul Walker as a college student driving across Wyoming who engages in a deadly game of cat and mouse with a deranged trucker named “Rusty Nail”.

Natural Born Killers – This 1994 Oliver Stone film depicts two young lovers who embark on a cross-country killing spree. It was based on the story of Charles Starkweather and his 13-year-old girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate, who committed 11 eleven murders in Nebraska before being captured in Douglas, Wyoming in 1959.

Prison – Filmed at the old Frontier Prison in Rawlins, this 1987 horror flick follows an inmate who was executed for a crime he did not commit. Years after his death, the inmate comes back to life and slaughters the men responsible for his execution.

Starship Troopers – This campy 1997 sci-fi movie was filmed at Hell’s Half Acre, which was used to depict the fictional planet Klendathu.
