The Wyoming Department of Transportation has released a new smartphone app designed to provide drivers with the latest travel information.

The Wyoming 511 app is available for most Android and Apple phones. Travelers can use it to plan trips, keep up with changing road conditions and even provide location services to friends, family, and first responders.

One feature of the app is map-based and allows users to access road conditions through department advisories or highway cameras.  Pavement conditions and traffic hazards are explained through a color-coding system, and the highway cameras provide the latest images from WYDOT’s statewide network of web cameras.

Drivers can stay safe when using the app while traveling through the “hands free, eyes free” function that provides verbal reports on incidents and conditions.  Users can define the radius for which they’d like to about conditions and traffic incidents.

The “Where Am I?” function uses GPS technology to locate the user by route and mile marker as well as latitude and longitude coordinates.  The location information is accurate to within one-tenth of a mile.

Future versions of the app will include weather sensors and information about road construction.

The app can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.  WYDOT does not collect any personally identifiable information through the app.
