On average 4-5 of these 28 ton trucks are hit a year. While plowing makes the roads safer to drive, there are hazards as it is plowed. WYDOT put together this video about safe driving and the dangers of snow plows. They say the massive truck can move side to side while plowing. Chunks of ice can spit out of the blade. Also plowing can create large snow clouds that obstruct visibility. Doug McGee, Public Affairs at WYDOT Cheyenne, recommends the following tips while driving with plows.

  1. Give at least 20 feet of roadway

  2. Wait for a safe time to pass

  3. Follow the plow rather than passing

  4. Take it slow

  5. Always buckle up
