According to local folklore, it began in 1986 when several skiers were trapped in a Jackson Hole bar waiting out a blizzard.  Restless, and thirsty, they invented a drinking game that is now played all over the world.

The game of Gelande Quaffing is named after Gelande Ski Jumping, which is appropriate, because it's a lot like ski jumping with mugs of beer. Players attempt to slide beers to their teammates on the opposite end of the bar, who then catch and drink them. Teams take turns switching sides and pitching beers during the game, which is timed, and points are rewarded for technical merit and artistic impression. The team with the most points at the end of each game is declared the winner.

In the years since its accidental invention, the game has developed a cult following throughout the winter sports community.  In February, sport drinking enthusiasts from several countries will descend on Jackson Hole to compete in the 8th Annual World Championships of Gelande Quaffing.
